From Concierge to Financial Analyst: How Michael Nigg Built a Successful Career at GardaWorld

September 3, 2020

Michael Nigg started working for GardaWorld in 2018. Read about Michael’s experience leading up to becoming a Financial Analyst for the U.S. Corporate HQ in St. Louis, MO.

I was a full-time college student in my last year, and I was looking for work flexible enough to fit my hectic school schedule. One of my college buddies was a recruiter at GardaWorld’s local St. Louis branch, and helped me get the position. I started as a security concierge in May 2018, at an upscale apartment building in St. Louis, where I worked the overnight shift. I never thought this position would take me to where I am now.

A motivating company atmosphere

The atmosphere at the company and the responsibility we have to our clients are what motivated me to build my career at GardaWorld. As a security concierge, it was my responsibility to make sure everyone felt safe. I also had to make sure I provided quality customer service if anyone had a problem.

A career with opportunities to make a difference

When I was a concierge, there was a resident with a mental disability at the apartment building who lived on her own. One day, her sister called and asked me to conduct a welfare check as the resident missed her work shift, which was not typical. I went to knock on her door, but when she didn’t answer, I  immediately contacted 911 and the building manager for assistance.

And it’s a good thing I did, because the resident had fallen and couldn’t get up. Once the fire department arrived, they broke down the door and took the resident to the hospital. Her family was extremely grateful for the actions we took.

A different role, but with some similarities

I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to advance my career at GardaWorld. I worked hard, followed my interests and strengths, and now work at the corporate office.

My role is very different now than when I started three years ago. However, in a way, I still have some of the same responsibilities. Every day, I deal with field managers who come to me when one of their officers or clients has a problem, and it’s my job to make sure we resolve that issue as quickly as possible.

I think everyone has that same mentality at GardaWorld; we want to make sure our officers feel safe, and clients get the best-in-class customer service they deserve. We are like a giant family that’s striving for the same goal: to be the very best in every way possible.

Treating others how you want to be treated

Growing up, I was always taught to treat others the way you want to be treated, and that’s exactly what I do. As a concierge, I would go out, put on the biggest smile, and just greet everyone with kindness and understanding.

You never know what others are going through. For all you know, someone is having the worst day of their life, and I personally feel it’s my job to make it better. I think this approach helped advance my career at GardaWorld. I also think that my charismatic personality helped.

Plenty of opportunities to advance your career at GardaWorld

If you want to advance your career, get to know the officers and managers you work with as much as you can. The more you get involved, the more you will stick out. GardaWorld loves to hire from within its own ranks. If you strive to be at the top, the company will take you there.
