Connected port operations

Cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure have surged in recent years, placing increased pressure on high-risk sectors like the maritime industry.  According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2024 Cyber Trends and Incident Metrics Evaluation (CTIME) Report, cyber incident reports increased by nearly 68% between 2021 and 2023.

In response to the growing frequency and sophistication of these threats, the U.S. Coast Guard finalized a new rule in January 2025 titled “Cybersecurity in the Marine Transportation System,” mandating cybersecurity requirements for vessels and facilities regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA).

What the 2025 USCG cybersecurity rule means for maritime security

The new rule, effective July 26, 2025, marks a significant step forward in safeguarding U.S. ports from evolving digital threats. It requires regulated sites to implement comprehensive cybersecurity measures, such as designating a 24/7 Cybersecurity Officer, completing an annual audit, and conducting training, drills, and exercises across IT and OT systems.

In anticipation of these changes, GardaWorld is proud to announce a major update to our Energy Sector training program - now fully aligned with the U.S. Coast Guard’s final rule for MTSA-regulated sites.

Key enhancements to GardaWorld’s cybersecurity training

Our in-house training modules have been enhanced to ensure:

  • Full compliance with Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) regulations
Facilities that fail to meet these new cybersecurity benchmarks risk operational shutdowns, reputational damage, and regulatory penalties. Our updated training ensures teams are prepared for these heightened requirements from day one.

  • Cybersecurity awareness tailored to high-risk infrastructure
Our curriculum has been intentionally built for maritime facilities and energy sector environments. Personnel learn how to identify vulnerabilities across both physical and digital systems - enhancing their ability to detect, report, and mitigate cyber threats before they escalate.

  • Immediate readiness for USCG inspections
Our comprehensive training ensures your teams are equipped for inspection protocols, audit procedures, and documentation review - all critical for avoiding disruption during Coast Guard evaluations.

  • Site-specific flexibility, including optional safety and supervisor modules
GardaWorld’s in-house training supports both MTSA-regulated and non-MTSA sites. Additionally, we offer optional training modules, including Safety (for locations not requiring Safety Council certification) and Supervisor programs to reinforce leadership accountability and situational awareness on-site.

Proactive protection for critical infrastructure

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT concern - it’s a frontline issue in maritime security. As threats become more sophisticated and widespread, organizations must move beyond basic compliance and adopt a proactive stance. At GardaWorld, we continue to lead with innovation, compliance, and operational excellence, supporting our clients in securing America's critical infrastructure.
