50/50 celebrations, marking Swaziland's 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain as well as King Mswati III's 50th birthday, are planned throughout the country for April 19. The main celebration will be held at the Mavuso Exhibition Centre, which will be streamed live to the rest of the country. April 20 has also been declared a public holiday.
On April 12, the Swaziland National Union of Students plans to protest the extravagant spending of the 50/50 celebrations. As of Monday, March 19, the details of the protest had not been finalized, but increased security and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected surrounding the demonstration.
Individuals in Swaziland are advised to expect crowded conditions, longer travel times, and increased security measures during the celebrations. Individuals are advised to avoid all protests, and remain vigilant due to the possibility of violence.
