The Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) is set to hold a march in the capital city of Suva on Saturday, April 7. The march will begin at the Suva Flea Market and will proceed down Rodwell Road, Scott Street, Thomson Street, and Victoria Parade, until it reaches Ratu Sukuna Park. While the Fiji Roads Authority has granted the necessary permit, the FTUC has not yet received approval from local police to hold the march as of Tuesday, April 3.
An increased security presence and localized transportation disruptions are anticipated in the vicinity of the march. While the march is intended to be peaceful, violent clashes between protesters and security personnel cannot be ruled out.
The FTUC is calling for authorities to increase the minimum wage and is protesting against labor law reforms.
Individuals in Suva are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and to anticipate transportation disruptions along the route of the march.
