TIMEFRAME expected from 5/14/2018, 12:00 AM until 5/14/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Philippines

A dozen soldiers and Abu Sayyaf militants were killed in an attempt to free hostages in the village of Tanum (Patikul municipality), in the south of the Philippines.

The Abu Sayyaf radical Islamist group has been involved for years in kidnappings, bombings, and various other violent activities in western Mindanao, particularly in the island provinces of Basilan and Sulu. The army is engaged in regular counter-terrorism operations against the group.

As a reminder, authorities advise against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago due to terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
