On Wednesday, May 16, at least one person was killed and 13 others were injured in sandstorms in the capital New Delhi. Significant damage has been reported, including uprooted trees, broken power cables, and damaged houses. Associated flight delays and cancelations are possible at New Delhi-Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). Adverse weather conditions are expected to continue into the coming days.


In recent weeks a series of sandstorms have killed hundreds of people in India, mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttarakhand states. Sand and rain storms typically hit India at this time of year; however, the current rainy season has been particularly intense.


Individuals present in New Delhi are advised to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Anticipate temporary disruptions to power, telecommunications, and transportation.
