Floods and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains have killed at least five people in Sri Lanka in the past days. According to the Disaster Management Center, over 1000 people were displaced by the torrential rains, with over 170 houses destroyed throughout the southern regions of the country. The most affected areas include Badulla, Kegalle, and Kalutara. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in the abovementioned regions in the coming days.

Monsoon rains typically affects Sri Lanka in May and June.

Individuals present in affected regions are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly evacuation orders, and to keep abreast of weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
