Residents in Tunis staged a protest on the evening of Tuesday, June 12 (local time), after media reports emerged on Monday, June 11, that ousted Minister of the Interior Lotfi Brahem had planned a coup d'etat with assistance from Emirati intelligence services. The protesters demanded an end to foreign meddling in the country and the dismissal of the Emirati ambassador from Tunisia. Additional related protests are possible in Tunis in the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated traffic disruptions are expected near protest sites.
According to media reports, Brahem met with the head of the Emirati intelligence services on the island of Djerba in late May to plan a coup attempt.
The plan was reportedly foiled with the help of the French, German, and Algerian intelligence services.
Individuals in Tunisia, particularly in Tunis, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
