Students are reportedly planning on holding a protest on the campus of the University of Lomé on Thursday, June 21. The time of the protest and the number of people expected to participate was unclear as of Wednesday, June 20. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the protest. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
The protesting students are demanding that the Ministry of Higher Education and Research open a dialogue to increase allowances and scholarships available to students, reform exam schedules, and reduce tuition costs for master's and doctorate programs, among other requests.
Individuals in Lomé are advised to avoid all public gatherings (especially political events) due to the risk of violence and to monitor the situation.
