The banned opposition party Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DVK) is planning to hold anti-government protests in Astana and Almaty on Friday, July 6. In Astana, protesters are expected to gather at the EXPO 2017 convention center. The rally in Almaty is planned to be held at Astana Square. Additional associated demonstrations may take place in other urban centers throughout the country. As of Monday, July 2, it is unclear how many people are expected to participate in the rallies. Heightened security measures are expected around all protest sites.
Nationwide DVK protests were planned to take place on June 23. Security personnel detained dozens of people, some who claimed to be regular citizens, prior to the start of the demonstrations.
Kazakhstan's law on public assembly is highly restrictive and effectively denies citizens the right to protest. Nevertheless, mass protest in the country do occur occasionally. In May 2016, dozens of individuals were arrested during protests held to denounce amendments to property laws.
Individuals present in Kazakhstan's main cities are advised to exercise caution and to avoid all demonstrations as violence may flare up without warning. Follow all instructions as issued by authorities and monitor developments to the situation.
