The Ras Adjir border crossing point between Tunisia and Libya remains closed as of Monday, July 30. According to Libyan officials, it is unclear when the border will reopen. Libyan and Tunisian officials reportedly met on July 25 but failed to reach an agreement to protect Libyan traders crossing the border.
Libya initially closed the border crossing point on July 10. It was temporarily reopened until July 15 after Libyan officials received information that Tunisian smugglers were harassing Libyan citizens and preventing them from reaching northern Tunisia. Libyan authorities are demanding that Tunisia take stronger measures to protect Libyan travelers from such harassment.
Individuals present in affected areas are advised to plan accordingly, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
