Tajik authorities announced Monday, July 30, that a hit-and-run on Sunday, July 29, may have been a terrorist act. The incident, in which four foreign cyclists were killed, occurred near Danghara (Khatlon province), roughly 90 km (55 mi) southeast of the capital Dushanbe. Two other tourists were wounded in the attack, with one reportedly suffering knife wounds. Tajikistan's interior minister reported Monday that four suspects in the case had been killed by security forces and a fifth was detained. Advice

Individuals in Tajikistan are advised to allow for additional travel time, avoid large public gatherings, and report any suspicious objects or behavior. Generally speaking, travelers are advised to avoid the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), a restricted zone along the border with Afghanistan which requires a special government permit for entry.
