In recent months, at least two foreign nationals have been drugged and robbed in the Kazakh city of Almaty. According to US diplomatic officials, one of the victims died. Reports indicate that both incidents took place near bars, and that in one case, the victim was given a cigarette laced with an incapacitating drug.

Individuals in Kazakhstan are advised to remain vigilant at all times and take common-sense measures to minimize the risk of becoming a target (e.g. maintain a low profile, do not wear or display items of value, etc.). Do not accept food, beverages, or cigarettes from strangers, and do not leave food or drinks unattended.
