At least 20 people were killed due to landslides and other monsoon rain-related incidents in southern Kerala state August 8-9. The casualties were reported in the districts of Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad.
The southwest summer monsoon, a four-month long period, is the principal rainy season for the Indian subcontinent. India receives about 75 percent of its annual rainfall during this period.
