Secondary school teachers will demonstrate in front of the Ministry of Education in Beirut on Thursday, August 16, to call for higher wages and tenure. The demonstration will begin at 10:00 (local time); at 11:30 participants will march from the Ministry of Education to the residence of the Speaker of Parliament in Ain el-Tineh. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the demonstration sites.
Teachers in the public and private education sectors have been protesting for months, some demanding long-term contracts and others calling for higher wages since the adoption of a salary hike for public sector workers that was passed in July 2017.
Individuals in Beirut are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
