A roadside bomb exploded in Aden on Tuesday, August 14, in an apparent assassination attempt on the Arab-coalition-backed provincial governor of Taiz. The provincial governor was reportedly unharmed by the blast; however, several others were wounded in the attack. No claim of responsibility was immediately reported. Additional attacks targeting Yemeni government officials and security forces are possible in Aden in the near-term.

The port city of Aden - the seat of the internationally recognized government currently at war with Houthi rebels - frequently witnesses assassination attempts on political and religious figures, as well as militant attacks on security forces carried out by the Islamic State (IS) group and Al-Qa'ida. Notably, on March 4, a drive-by shooting killed two security force members in the Mansourah neighborhood. Additionally, on February 24, twin vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attacks in Aden killed at least 14 people and wounded 54 others near a counterterrorism facility. Both attacks were claimed by IS.

Yemen is engaged in a complex and deadly conflict, ongoing since Houthi rebels entered into a civil war with the Yemeni government, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, in 2015. More than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the fighting and over 2.5 million have been displaced.

The security environment in Yemen remains complex. Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
