On Monday, August 13, the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) announced it would begin a strike on August 27 should negotiations with of Ministry of Education fail to yield appropriate results. The GTU has said that the strike will continue "until further notice," and could delay the new academic term set to begin on September 3. Associated protests are possible if the strike is held.


The GTU and Ministry of Labor have been in long-running talks regarding wages, with the GTU rejecting a recent counter-offer by the government.
