Suspected militants launched a body-borne improvised explosive device (BBIED) attack at the Mawood Academy in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood of Kabul at around 16:10 (local time) on Wednesday, August 15, killing at least 25 people and wounding some 35 others. Security forces have reportedly cordoned off the area to traffic. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault; the Taliban have denied involvement. Additional militant attacks are possible on educational facilities in Kabul in the near-term.
Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the area of the attack, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
