Protesters are planning to hold a protest march in Asunción on Wednesday, August 15, to denounce government corruption and a recent agreement with Argentina that involves a large Paraguayan debt. Participants are expected to gather at 18:00 (local time) at Pantheon of the Heroes and march to Plaza de Armas, in front of the National Congress.

Additional related demonstrations are expected to take place throughout the city during the ongoing events surrounding the presidential inauguration which began at 07:00 on August 15. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected in the areas surrounding the inauguration ceremony as well as the demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

On Wednesday, August 15, Mario Abdo Benítez of the conservative Colorado Party was inaugurated as president, replacing Horacio Cartes (also of the Colorado Party). Inaugural events scheduled to place at Palacio de López are from 07:00 through 15:30. Security forces blocked off the perimeter of the National Congress ahead of the inauguration; Oliva Street and Estados Unidos Street to Don Bosco remain closed through at least 15:30 on August 15.

Thousands of people are expected to protest the presidential inauguration at Plaza Italia and the Pantheon of the Heroes on August 15. Law enforcement has stated that the Law of the Marchódromo is in place, which only allows demonstrations between 19:00 and 24:00.

Individuals present in Asunción are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and follow all instructions issued by the local authorities.
