Pakistan: Authorities threaten to block Twitter

Pakistan News Alert

Micro-blogging website Twitter could be banned in Pakistan for failing to comply with government demands

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/16/2018, 12:00 AM until 8/16/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Karachi). COUNTRY/REGION Pakistan

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the micro-blogging website Twitter could be banned in Pakistan for failing to comply with requests from the government to block objectionable content. Other social network platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, have complied with the demands.

Other attempts to restrict social media outlets have been made in Pakistan over the past decade: Facebook was banned (twice) in 2008 and 2010, as was YouTube between 2012 and 2014.

Individuals using Twitter in Pakistan are advised to keep abreast of the situation and anticipate an eventual service interruption.
