Tropical Storm Ernesto is forecast to make landfall in Ireland at approximately 20:00 (local time) on Saturday, August 18. Meteorological authorities have issued yellow weather alerts nationwide from 20:00 on Saturday through 08:00 on Sunday. Ernesto is forecast to deliver heavy rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in), with locally higher downpours. Southwestern Ireland is expected to see associated wind gusts of up to 70-80 km/h (43-50 mph). Transportation disruptions are possible throughout Ireland on August 18.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October. Researchers are predicting a slightly below-average hurricane season for 2018.
Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate strong winds and heavy rain (and associated disruptions), and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
