Japan News Alert

Typhoon Soulik to reach the southern region of Kyushu on the evening of August 21; expect high winds and torrential rain in south and west of Japan

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/20/2018, 12:00 AM until 8/20/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Japan

Event

Powerful Typhoon Soulik is expected to reach the southern region of Kyushu by the end of the day Tuesday, August 21, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the south and the west of the country. Up to 18 cm (7 in) of rain is expected in the central region of Tokai and up to 40 cm (16 in) in the Amami region. Associated landslides and flooding are anticipated. Winds of up to 162 km/h (100 mph) are forecast in Amami August 21, and up to 108 km/h (67 mph) in southern Kyushu.

Context

Soulik, the 19th typhoon of the year, will be followed by yet another storm.

Advice

Individuals present in the above regions are advised to keep abreast of the situation, anticipate traffic disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
