Event

Student protests ongoing since mid-July continue to take place on a regular basis throughout the country, notably in the capital Tegucigalpa. On Monday, August 20, students at different public institutions clashed with police in the capital. Last week, students began to “occupy” schools and university buildings in the north and center of the country, disrupting classes. They also regularly block streets, e.g. Suyapa Boulevard in Tegucigalpa, often leading to confrontations with police. Further such protests are likely in the coming days.

Context

Students have been protesting to demand lower fuel prices and scholarship money. An associated series of transportation strikes had a major impact on daily life in Honduras, leading to school closures and limited government services.

Advice

Individuals in Tegucigalpa are advised to avoid all protests due to the risk of violence and to refrain from using public transportation and inter-city buses at all times for security reasons.
