Factory workers are continuing to stage protests in Maseru on Tuesday, August 21, demanding higher wages. Protesters have reportedly staged demonstrations in the Thetsane Industrial area and have marched on Moshoeshoe Road toward Kingsway. Gunfire, burning tires in streets, and incidents of vandalism have been reported amid a heightened security presence, with both military and police personnel being deployed to the area.
Continuing heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected in affected areas in the coming hours. Similar protests are possible in the coming days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Notably, on August 14, protests turned violent when police reportedly fired rubber bullets and water cannons onto crowds of demonstrators gathered at Thetsane Industrial area, outside of Maseru.
According to local media, the factory workers have been on strike since July 9 - when the government failed to meet the workers' 14-day ultimatum demanding increased wages.
Individuals in Maseru are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
