Event

On Tuesday, August 21, opposition members of congress presented piece of legislation that would make abortions free and legal through the 14th week of pregnancy. Protests by groups both in favor and against abortion rights are to be anticipated in Chilean cities in the coming days and weeks.

Feminist groups held associated marches in cities nationwide on July 25, including in the capital Santiago where masked men armed with knives attack protesters, injuring three women as well as a police officer; the perpetrators also erected barricades as a counter-protest.

Context

Abortion is a highly polemic issue in predominately Catholic Chile, as well as elsewhere in Latin America.

Individuals in Chile are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
