Costa Rica: Fishermen threaten protest actions nationwide August 28

Costa Rica News Alert

Nationwide protests declared August 28 as fishermen demand less government intervention in fishing sector; fishermen vow to continue protesting until government satisfies their demands

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/22/2018, 12:00 AM until 8/29/2018, 11:59 PM (America/Costa_Rica). COUNTRY/REGION Costa Rica

Fishermen have called for protesters to obstruct roads across Costa Rica on Tuesday, August 28, and have threatened to continue protesting until the government satisfies their demands to lessen its intervention in the fishing sector. Specifically, members of fishing communities believe that Costa Rican fisheries can be sustainably fished without government intervention and that the government is currently impeding fishermen from working to support their families. Related demonstrations are expected in communities throughout the country, notably including Caldera, Quepos, Dominical, Río Claro, and Limón. An increased security presence and transportation disruptions are possible in the vicinity of all protests.

Individuals in Costa Rica are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization.
