Powerful Typhoon Cimaron is heading towards western Japan and is expected to make landfall late on Thursday, August 23 (local time). Cimaron is then expected to move in a northerly direction on August 24. Heavy rain - up to 80 cm (31 in) within a 24-hour period in parts of central Japan - and strong winds - up to 210 km/h (130 mph) - are forecast for affected areas.
Cimaron is following on the heels of Typhoon Soulik, which brought heavy rain to the southern island of Kyushu earlier in the week. In July, heavy rain and subsequent flooding and landslides killed more than 200 people in the country.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to be prepared for possible flooding (notably in low-lying areas and along rivers), landslides (in hilly areas), and rough surf.
