A forest fire is burning approximately 50 km (30 mi) south of Berlin as of Friday, August 24, after having spread significantly overnight August 23-24. The fire is located near Treuenbrietzen in a forest home to a large number of unexploded Soviet-era munitions. Some 550 people have been evacuated from nearby areas. Smoky conditions have been reported in Berlin, which could be hazardous to the health of certain vulnerable individuals.


Individuals in the Berlin area are advised to monitor the situation, limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity (particularly children and those with respiratory illnesses), and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
