On Monday, August 20, the Moroccan Ministerial Council approved a draft law that would reinstate compulsory military service for men and women between the ages of 19 and 25 years old for a duration of 12 months. The draft law is expected to be approved by Parliament following a debate scheduled for October. Demonstrations opposing the law have not been planned as of Friday, August 24, however, related protests cannot be ruled out in the coming days and weeks. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near all demonstration sites.
Individuals in Morocco are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
