Lebanon News Alert

Teachers to demonstrate in Beirut on August 28; heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/28/2018, 12:00 AM until 8/31/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Beirut). COUNTRY/REGION Beirut

Teachers belonging to the General Labour Union of Lebanese workers and the Committee of Professional Teachers in Vocational Education are planning to stage a protest on Riad al-Solh Square, located in the center of the capital Beirut, on Tuesday, August 28. The demonstration is expected to start around noon (local time). Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around the demonstration.

Teachers in the public and private education sectors have been protesting for months, some demanding long-term contracts and others calling for higher wages since the adoption of a salary hike for other public sector workers was passed in July 2017.

Individuals in Beirut are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
