Demonstrations against a proposed mining project are set to take place on Wednesday, August 29, in La Paz and San José del Cabo (both in Baja California Sur state). In La Paz, protesters are expected to rally at the Baja California Sur Government Palace beginning at 10:00 (local time). In San José del Cabo, demonstrators plan to gather in front of the National Tourism Fund (FONATUR) office - located on the arterial Transpeninsular Highway - beginning at 18:00. An increased security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected surrounding all protests. 

Context

Protesters are pushing back against the "Los Cardones" mining project, which would repurpose land from the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve. Activists claim the project would have significant environmental consequences and open the door to similar projects in the future.
