A court in Yangon convicted two journalists of breaking Myanmar’s Official Secrets Act on Monday, September 3. The two journalists received seven-year prison sentences. Both men have maintained that they are innocent and were set up by the police. Following the verdict, numerous international media organizations rejected the ruling. Associated protests in support of the journalists are possible in the coming days.
Two journalists working with an international media company were detained in December 2017 when investigating the killing of Rohingya in Rakhine state.
Individuals in Yangon are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant, anticipate a heightened security presence and traffic disruptions, and avoid all public gatherings as precaution.
