Maratha Kranti Thok Morcha, formerly known as Maratha Kranti Morcha, called off a road roko andolan (road blockade rally) previously scheduled in Maharashtra state for Tuesday, September 4, and Wednesday, September 5. The rally was set to begin Tuesday evening in Kolhapur and arrive in Mumbai the following day. Protest leaders announced they would postpone the demonstration until at least late November to allow more time for negotiations with the government. Maratha Kranti Thok Morcha has previously stated their intentions to begin a "period of agitation" on December 1 should their demands not be met.
The Marataha "group of castes" is traditionally a rural class of farmers and has been organizing rallies and protests across Maharashtra state, particularly in its capital of Mumbai, which have become increasingly violent. Their demands include a quota for educational posts and jobs and the release of youth arrested in previous protests.
Individuals in Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, are advised to monitor the situation and avoid any public gatherings as a precaution.
