Climate change protest planned in Brussels September 8; heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions expected

The civic group, Rise for Climate Belgium is planning to hold a protest in Brussels on Saturday, September 8, to call on the EU and Belgian governments to honor its commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Participants are expected to demonstrate at Place du Luxembourg from 12:00 to 14:00 (local time). A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the demonstration site.


The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in which state signatories commit to reducing its country's impact on global warming. The agreement was adopted by 196 state representatives in December 2015.


Individuals in Brussels are advised to monitor developments to the situation and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution.
