Heavy rains in Chengdu (Sichuan) caused major flight disruptions on Wednesday, September 5, including the temporary closure of the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU); at least 34 flights were canceled and another 98 were delayed. Chinese meteorological authorities forecast heavy rainfall and gale force winds to affect Chengdu and eastern Sichuan province through Thursday, September 6. Flash floods, mudslides, and continued transportation disruptions are possible in the coming days.
Heavy rainfall and flooding are common during the monsoon season which lasts from May through November.
Individuals present in Sichuan province are advised to keep abreast of the situation, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
