India: Opposition calls nationwide strike over fuel prices on September 10

India News Alert

Congress opposition party in favour of a nationwide strike (bandh) on September 10 between 09:00 and 15:00

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/7/2018, 12:00 AM until 9/7/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION India

The largest opposition party - The Congress - has called the public and the civil society sector to participate in a nationwide strike (a 'Bharat Bandh') on September 10 over rising fuel prices. Several other opposition parties will join the protest, to take place between 09:00 and 15:00.

Despite being in the opposition for four years now, the Congress party retains an import authority and influence on the Indian population, which may participate in large numbers in this nationwide strike, more especially on the sensitive issue of rising fuel price.

Individuals staying in India on September 10 are advised to anticipate the impact of a nationwide strike (on transportation and law and order) on the daily life, especially in large urban centers. Please avoid rallies and march protests, as they may turn violent. Adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
