Thousands of hotel workers in Chicago (Illinois) began a strike on Friday morning (local time), September 7, to demand improved benefits. Protesters gathered outside at least 25 hotels throughout the city beginning at 05:00 on Friday. It has not been reported how long the strike is expected to last as of Friday morning. According to hotel representatives, no interruptions to hotel services are anticipated during the strike. Nevertheless, further associated demonstrations are possible in the coming hours and days. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all demonstration sites.
Unite Here Local 1, the union which represents the hotel workers is currently in negotiations with 30 hotels in Chicago after contracts expired on August 31.
Individuals present in Chicago are advised to avoid demonstrations as a precaution and allow for additional time to reach their destinations during the strikes.
