US Geological Survey reports 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Yunnan province on September 9; no damages or casualties reported

Event

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Yunnan province at approximately 10:30 (local time) on Saturday, September 8. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located about 18 km (11 mi) west-southwest of Lianzhu. As of 12:00, no damages or casualties have been reported. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals present in Yunnan province are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger.
