An opposition-led shutdown strike taking place on Monday, September 10, has resulted in disruptions nationwide. The political mobilization has so far remained relatively peaceful. Some violent incidents resulting in material damage have, however, been reported in several cities, including Pune and Patna. Protest marches were held in numerous cities and states (e.g. New Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka, and Odisha), with railways services disrupted, shops closed, and road traffic severely impacted. Large police contingents were deployed to various areas to maintain law and order.
The largest opposition party - the Congress - called for the nationwide strike (a "Bharat Bandh") to denounce rising fuel prices.
Individuals present in India are advised to anticipate continued transportation and law and order disruptions throughout the duration of the strike, especially in large urban centers, and avoid all rallies and protests due to the risk of violence. Adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
