As of Monday, September 10, the Delta Fire - located directly north of Redding (California) - had grown to over 19,000 hectares (47,000 acres) and is reportedly 5 percent contained. The section of Interstate 5 (I-5) between Redding and Mount Shasta, which was originally closed on September 5, was reopened on Monday morning with limited access (one lane in each direction). Nonetheless, local authorities have warned that longer travel times and significant delays are still to be anticipated along I-5 as well as on alternative routes not equipped for the traffic levels typically seen on I-5 (e.g. Routes 299 and 89) in the area. As of September 10, mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect in Shasta county (for residents along the I-5 corridor from exit 707 at Vollmers north to exit 714 at Gibson) and Trinity county (for residents of East Fork Road to Ramshorn Road east to the Shasta Trinity County line); a non-mandatory evacuation warning is also in effect for Dunsmuir residents in Siskiyou county. Further evacuations and road closures, including of the interstate, remain possible in the coming days.

The Delta Fire began on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 5, approximately 3.2 km (2 mi) north of Lakehead, and quickly spread. The fire is burning close to areas already affected by the Carr and Hirz fires. California typically experiences wildfires from May through November.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas near the wildfire, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and monitor the situation. Children and those with respiratory illnesses are advised to limit outdoor activity.
