Civil society groups call for demonstrations against pension reforms in Madrid September 12, 19, 22, 26; localized traffic disruptions expected

A series of protests to denounce the 2011 pension reforms are scheduled to take place in Madrid between Wednesday, September 12, and Wednesday, September 26. On September 12, demonstrators will gather in front of the Congress of Deputies building starting at 12:00 (local time). Similar rallies are expected to take place outside the Lower Chamber on Wednesday, September 19, and September 26. A march from Atocha to Puerta del Sol will also be held on Saturday, September 22, beginning at 19:00. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.


Protesters are demanding an increase in the minimum monthly pension and keeping the retirement age at 65, among other demands.


Individuals in Madrid are advised to monitor the situation avoid all protests as a precaution.
