Contractual teachers clash with security forces during a demonstration in Beirut on September 13; further protests likely

Clashes broke out between secondary school teachers and security forces on Thursday, September 13, during a demonstration taking place in front of the Education Ministry in Beirut. Further associated protests are possible and further violence cannot be ruled out.


Teachers in the public and private sectors have been protesting for months, some demanding long-term contracts and others calling for higher wages since the adoption of a salary hike for public sector workers was passed in July 2017.


Individuals in Beirut are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
