Heavy rain has caused widespread flooding across Senegal on Thursday, September 13, and Friday, September 14. According to local sources, severe flooding was reported in Dakar, as well as in the regions of Diourbel and Fatick. In Dakar, the areas most affected by the floods include the neighborhoods of Grand Médine, Rufisque, and Pikine. Widespread transportation disruptions and severe infrastructural damages (e.g. roads) have been reported in affected areas. Further flooding is possible as rain is forecast throughout Senegal in the coming days.
Individuals present in affected areas should monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding and associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and foodstuffs discarded.
