The United Workers Front (FUT) labor union is calling for supporters to hold protests across the country on Thursday, September 20. Associated demonstration are possible in urban areas nationwide and a march is planned to take place in Quito. Supporters in Quito are expected to gather at Plaza San Blasand at 16:30 (local time) before marching to Calderon Park. Heightened security measures and traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.


FUT leaders are protesting recent government austerity measures, including reducing fuel subsidies. The government announced the new measures on August 21 in an effort to lower the fiscal deficit from 7.3 percent of the GDP to 4.3 percent by the end of 2018.


Individuals in Ecuador, particularly in Quito, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
