Security tightened along the Thailand-Myanmar border in the aftermath of a jailbreak in Hpa-An (Kayin state in Myanmar)

On, Tuesday, September 18, security was tightened along the Thailand-Myanmar border in the north of the two countries following a jailbreak that took place in Hpa-An, the capital of Kayin state in Myanmar. Security forces were especially mobilized at the Mae Sot immigration checkpoint in Mae Sot district (Tak province; Thailand). Reports indicate that 27 of the 41 escapees are still at large and may seek to cross the border into Thailand.


The Burmese state of Kayin borders the Thai provinces of Mae Hong Son, Tak, and Kanchanaburi. Mae Sot in Tak province is the closest regular border crossing to Hpa-An.


Individuals present in Mae Hong Son, Tak, and Kanchanaburi provinces are advised to remain cautious and to report any suspicious behavior to the local authorities.
