Lebanon News Alert

Teachers hold protests requesting contractual changes in Beirut on September 18; further gatherings expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/18/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/18/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Beirut). COUNTRY/REGION Beirut

Protests continue in Beirut, with secondary school teachers gathering in front of the Education Ministry on Tuesday, September 18. A prior demonstration took place on September 13, resulting in clashes between protesters and security forces. Further related protests are possible and associated violence cannot be ruled out.

Teachers in the public and private sectors have been protesting for months, some demanding long-term contracts and others calling for higher wages since the adoption of a salary hike for public sector workers was passed in July 2017.

Individuals in Beirut are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
