TIMEFRAME expected from 9/20/2018, 12:00 AM until 9/20/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Blantyre). COUNTRY/REGION Malawi

Civil society organizations are planning to stage nationwide anti-government protests on Friday, September 21, to denounce corruption issues. Supporters of the United Transformation Movement party (UTM) are planning to participate as well. A heightened security presence is likely in major cities throughout the country, notably in the capital Lilongwe. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Corruption is widespread in Malawi and has led to several scandals at the highest level of the state apparatus, resulting in various protests.

Individuals in Malawi are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution.
