Mozambique News Alert

Suspected Islamist militants carry out attack on village in Cabo Delgado province September 20, killing at least 12 people; similar attacks to be expected in the near-term

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/20/2018, 12:00 AM until 9/28/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Maputo). COUNTRY/REGION Cabo Delgado province

Suspected Islamist militants launched an attack on the village of Paqueue (Cabo Delgado province) late (local time) on Thursday, September 20. Local reports claimed that at least 12 villagers were killed and 14 others were wounded after the militants set fire to the village. On the same evening, a military convoy was also attacked near the Tanzanian border, killing one army official. Similar attacks can be expected in Cabo Delgado province in the near-term.

Though the attacks have not yet been claimed, the Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jamo/Ansar al-Sunna (Shabaab) group is suspected of carrying them out. The group has been blamed for carrying out sporadic attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces members.

This latest attack is reportedly the deadliest in Cabo Delgado province since the group became active in October 2017.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Western governments advise against nonessential travel to parts of Cabo Delgado province. Travelers in or intending to travel to Cabo Delgado province should seek professional security support due to the volatile security environment and potential for further attacks.
