Around 100 people gathered in Odessa (Odessa oblast) on Sunday, September 23, to protest an assassination attempt targeting activist Oleg Mikhailyk the day before. Protesters gathered in front of the General Directorate of National Police building at 14:00 (local time) on Sunday to protest the police's alleged role of abetting the attack and demand the resignations of the chief of the Odessa regional police and the public prosecutor; a similar demonstration is expected to take place at 16:00 on Monday, September 24 in front of the same building. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the demonstration site.
Some Ukrainian politicians have claimed that attacks on activists and journalists have become increasingly common in recent months, with at least one attacked per month over the past 18 months.
Individuals in Odessa are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
