Algeria News Alert

Army veterans march to Algiers on September 24 requesting improved benefits; significant traffic disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/24/2018, 12:00 AM until 9/27/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Algiers). COUNTRY/REGION Algiers

A protest is being held by army veterans in the vicinity of the capital Algiers as of Monday, September 24. Protesters are marching from Haouch El Makhfi towards Algiers and have blocked the A1 highway since Monday morning (local time). Traffic between Algiers and the eastern part of the country is entirely impeded, as is access to the city's Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG).

Former soldiers of the Algerian People's National Armed Force have been requesting a revision of their pensions and salaries for the past two years. Marches and demonstrations have already been organized throughout the country. Veterans have been mobilized in Haouch El Makhfi for the past six days; clashes occurred between protesters and security forces on September 23.

Individuals in Algeria are advised to monitor the situation, plan alternative routes, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
